Summer Library Program 2021

Summer may be a bit different this year, but fun is still on the agenda at the Jackson County Library System.

We have activity logs for all ages! Registration begins June 1 and the final day to earn prizes is August 13. You can register in person, by phone, or right here on the website. You can pick up reading logs at the library, or print them from here. Call your library for more information.

Infant & Toddler

Easy, fun activities to complete with your little one during the summer.

PreK-4th Grade

Complete any 10 activities to earn a small prize and then complete any 20 activities on the activity log to earn another prize! When you register, you will also receive a necklace to start earning beads all summer by visiting the library and taking part in library programs. If you register online, make sure to ask for your necklace the next time you stop into the library.

Tween Reading Log

For those entering grades 5-7. Keep track of your minutes reading to earn prizes! Earn a prize for every 175 minutes you read. Complete the card by reading 1050 minutes to be entered into a prize drawing!

Teen Reading Log

For those entering grades 8-12. Keep track of your minutes reading to earn prizes! Earn a prize for every 250 minutes you read. Complete the card by reading 1500 minutes to be entered into a prize drawing!

Tween & Teen BINGO

Earn even more prizes by completing activities on the Tween & Teen BINGO card! You can earn a prize for your first BINGO and for a Blackout.

Adult Bingo

Earn prizes and explore new books with our Adult BINGO card! You can earn a prize for your first BINGO and for a Blackout.

Family Bingo

Spend time together as a family by doing the activities on our Family BINGO! Together you can play and read your way to a prize for your first BINGO and for a Blackout.

Poisons and venoms? Extreme Flexibility? Tongues full of spikes? Horrible smells? These are all survival tactics of the weirdest creatures in MN. Join our naturalists as we explore MN’s strangest animals and the world they live in.

Craft Kits

This year we're providing craft kits for pickup at the library for toddlers through adults. Call your library to request a craft kit every month starting June1. Kits will be available for pickup the entire month at all three library locations. Only a limited number of kits are available, so make sure to call in and reserve yours! They can be reserved one week before they become available.

The grades listed are what they will be entering Fall 2021.

Travel virtually to Seward, Alaska to the Alaska SeaLife Center!

Minnesota Nature Photography Contest

How it works

Go outside and explore Minnesota, capturing the perfect picture of Minnesota's natural beauty. Then, email it to the library at jclmn@co.jackson.mn.us with your name and grade with the subject "Photo Contest" by June 18. Submitting a photo gives the Jackson County Library System permission to post it in the library and on the library's social media.


All submitted photos will be on display in each of the three libraries and on the libraries' Facebook & Instagram from June 22 - 25 for voting. One Teen and one Tween winner from each library will receive a canvas print of their winning photo! Winning photos will be on display in the libraries through the end of the Summer Library Program to show off the talent of Jackson County Youth.

Night Hike

How it works

Join us at the Prairie Ecology Bus Center for a night hike to test your senses in the dark. Learn how nocturnal animals do so well, using their eyes, ears, toes and tails. Then gather around the campfire for s’mores, songs and constellation tales! Signed permission slips are due back the library by 5 PM on Wednesday, August 4. You can pick up a form at any of the three libraries or print it at home.

Transportation:
Registration is required as space is limited and first come, first serve. Others will need to arrange their own travel.
- Van leaves Jackson Library at 8 PM
- Bus leaves Heron Lake Library @ 7:55 PM
& Okabena Park @ 8:10 PM

Summer Storytime

Stories! Music! Fingerplays! Enjoy Summer Storytimes virtually with Ms. Carrie, Ms. Kathy, and Ms. Sunny. Summer Storytimes will be posted on all three library Facebook pages every Tuesday,  June 8 - August 31 at 10 AM. You can also watch them below on demand after they premiere. Storytime craft kits are available for pickup with fun, developmentally appropriate crafts to take storytime even further!

Lego Challenge

Use your imagination and build new creations with your legos! A new lego challenge will be posted every Monday on the library Facebook pages. Share back pictures of your finished creations!

Match the Tracks!

Stop by the each library, spot their window display, and try to match the tracks to the animals who made them! Displays will be out July 12-23 and August 9-20.

Story Strolls

Enjoy being outside and read a story all at the same time! Story Strolls will have pages from entire children's picture books posted in Jackson, Lakefield, and Heron Lake for families to read as they walk together. Each community will have different stories, so you can travel to all three to enjoy even more books!

Virtual Pet Parade!

Share a photo of your pet to be a part of the pet parade! Submit a photo and some information about your pet by emailing it to jclmn@co.jackson.mn.us with the subject "Pet Parade" and then we'll show them to the world!

Information to Include: Name of pet, Type of pet: dog, cat, iguana etc. (include breed if applicable), Age of pet, Something they love to do (the sillier the better!), and Owner(s) first names

Summer Storytime!

You can watch Summer Storytime whenever you want! New storytimes are posted each Tuesday at 10 AM. You can take the storytime fun even further by getting a Storytime Kit at the library, which is filled with fun crafts perfect for small hands.

You can watch Bedtime Storyhour whenever you want! New storyhours are posted the fourth Thursday of the month at 7 PM. You can take the storyhour fun even further by getting a Storytime Kit at the library, which is filled with fun crafts perfect for small hands.
